The Heart in Chinese Medicine

In Chinese medicine, the Heart is considered the "Emperor" of the body. It is responsible for governing not only the circulation of blood but also the realm of consciousness, emotions, and spirit. The Heart houses the Shen, or mind/spirit, which encompasses awareness, memory, and emotional balance. The Heart’s health is reflected in a person’s vitality, mental clarity, clear complexion, and ability to connect with others, making it central to both physical and mental well-being. Unlike Western medicine, where the heart is primarily a mechanical pump, Chinese medicine views the Heart as an energetic and spiritual entity, deeply connected with the body’s overall harmony.

The Heart is associated with the fire element, and works in partnership with other fire organs, particularly the Small intestine, which separates the pure from the impure in digestion, mirroring the Heart’s role in discerning thought and emotion. The Heart also has a role in supporting the Kidneys which helps us access and build our physical and mental reserves. Imbalances in the Heart can manifest as physical symptoms like palpitations, insomnia, or poor circulation, as well as emotional disturbances such as anxiety, restlessness, or excessive joy. These symptoms are often linked to disruptions in the fire element, which can "flare up" due to stress, overexcitement, or Heat in the body.

Chinese medicine focuses on restoring the Heart’s balance and supporting the Shen. Calming herbs like sour jujube seed or acupuncture at points along the heart meridian can be used to settle a restless mind or address insomnia. Diet and emotional regulation are also key—bitter foods can help clear excess Heat, while practices like meditation or Qigong support a calm and clear Shen. The Heart’s role extends beyond the individual, influencing relationships and communication; a balanced Shen fosters warmth and connection with others and feelings of safety in the world. This holistic approach highlights the Chinese medical view that the Heart is not just an organ, but a bridge between body, mind, and the external world.
